June Prayer Letter

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your prayers this past month. It was a busy one, with lots of travel, meetings, and a couple of preaching opportunities. I’m thankful for God’s protection and guidance.

The photo above is from my visit to the Immanuel Church in Nirayama, where I preached and led worship in English with the help of an interpreter. It’s a very small church, as you can see, but on the day of my visit there were six guests. One of the pastors told me by email later that two young girls who were visiting that day were showing an interest to putting their faith in Jesus. Please pray for these two girls and for the pastors as they follow up with them.

I’d appreciate your prayers as we enter the summer months. Here are some things going on in June you can pray for:

  • 6/2 — English Cafe
  • 6/3 — Hiking ministry
  • 6/14 — Leading worship
  • 6/18 AM — Preaching in Nagoya
  • 6/18 PM — English Bible study

Again, thank you so much for your prayers and support!

– Robin

Photo of the Week: Mountains

It’s no secret I’m in love with the mountains of Japan. Looking at this, how could anyone wonder why? (Taken from atop mount Sengatake in Mie prefecture, January 2016.)

Prayer Letter for May 2017

Hi everyone,

I’ll keep it short this month since I just sent out a full newsletter a couple weeks ago. If you missed that, please follow the link below to check it out:

This is a holiday week in Japan, so things are pretty quiet, but for me it’s just the calm before the storm, as May is the beginning of my busy season. I always need people praying but I’d especially appreciate them during the spring and summer. Here are some specific May events to pray about:

  • 5/9 — Mission-related meetings in Tokyo
  • 5/10 — Worship leading at prayer meeting in Nagoya
  • 5/14 — Preaching and music ministry at Itabashi Immanuel Church in Tokyo
  • 5/21 — Preaching and music ministry at Nirayama Immuanuel Church
  • 5/28 — English Bible study in Nagoya

Thank you and God bless!

Photo of the Week: Samurai & Sakura

A samurai statue under the shade of a Sakura (cherry blossom) tree. April 2017.

This week’s photo is a bit of a change, as it was shot analogue, not digital, using my Holga toy camera. I like the unpredictability and imperfection you get with a Holga, including light leaks and discolouration. There’s something warm and friendly and fun about it.

Sumo Surprise! (Photo of the Week)

Last summer, I went with a student and another guy to see some sumo wrestlers training together outside a local temple where they were staying. These were lower-ranking guys, but still pretty powerful, and interesting to watch up close. What’s surprising to some is that it’s not always the biggest wrestler who’s the most powerful.

Photo of the Week — Osaka-Sayama

If I were more on-the-ball, these weekly photos would be more topical or seasonal. Maybe someday. In the meantime, here’s a random photo from May 2015, taken in my Japan “hometown,” Sayama City in Osaka prefecture. Way back in 2002, Sayama was my first home in Japan. It’s not very big or well-known, even in Japan. But it’s a lovely little suburban city, and it’s conveniently close to Osaka city. This photo was taken at Sayama Pond, and shows a typical shinto shrine out in the water, with the PL Tower (of the Perfect Liberty religious group) far-off in the background.
